CATL's 6006 electric cargo ship sets national benchmark for inland waterway innovation
China's CATL has introduced the 6006 pure electric cargo ship, which was recently selected as a national model for transportation and energy integration. The vessel represents a major step forward in zero-emission shipping and sustainable logistics.
The 6006 is a 222-foot-long cargo ship with a width of 41.5 feet and a load capacity of nearly 2,000 tons. It operates along the Jining section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, traveling between Liangshan Port and Longgong Port. Powered by two modular battery boxes with a total capacity of 3,919 kWh, the ship can sail up to 143 miles on a full charge. Battery swapping takes just 15 minutes, enabling rapid turnaround and efficient operations.
Built and operated by Ronghui Times-a joint venture between CATL and Jining Energy-the ship integrates CATL's full-scenario technical solutions across vessel, port, and cloud systems. Jining Energy contributes its expertise in port infrastructure, shipbuilding, and logistics, creating a comprehensive solution that covers ship construction, leasing, charging, battery swapping, and maintenance.
The 6006 offers significant economic and environmental benefits. Compared to traditional fuel-powered tankers, it reduces energy and maintenance costs and eliminates over 50 tons of annual fuel consumption. It also achieves zero carbon emissions, cutting sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter-improving air quality and protecting aquatic ecosystems along the canal.
The project supports the development of a regional green shipping industry and contributes to the construction of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal New Energy Transportation Pilot Zone. Its success provides a replicable model for electrifying inland cargo fleets across China.
