China finalizes CR450 high‑speed train design for 2026 as prototype hits 453 km/hChina Railway Group has confirmed that the CR450 high‑speed EMU will complete its application assessment and finalize its design in 2026, marking a major step toward next‑generation ultra‑high‑speed rail deployment. The company plans to invest 520 billion yuan in rail infrastructure this year and put more than 2,000 kilometers of new lines into operation.

The CR450 prototype has already achieved a world‑leading top speed of 453 km/h (281 mph) during single‑train testing, and an intersection passing speed of 896 km/h (557 mph) when two trains crossed at high speed. The train is currently undergoing a 600,000‑kilometer reliability assessment, a requirement before it can enter passenger service.

China Railway Group will also advance testing of 400 km/h infrastructure technologies, including track, power systems, and operational safety verification. Additional work will focus on improving the quality and adaptability of existing high‑speed lines.

China's current fastest commercial service is the Fuxing CR400 series, which operates at 350 km/h (217 mph), the highest regular operating speed in the world. By comparison, Japan's Shinkansen E5/E6/E7 and France's TGV M operate at 320 km/h (199 mph), Germany's ICE 3/4 at 300 km/h (186 mph), South Korea's KTX at 305 km/h (189 mph), and the US Acela at 240 km/h (149 mph).

China also leads globally in high‑speed rail mileage, with more than 50,000 kilometers of lines in operation-over 70 percent of the world's total. For comparison, Spain has 3,993 km, Japan 3,147 km, France 2,760 km, and Germany 1,631 km.
