China's farthest offshore wind farm connects to grid at full capacity
China has achieved a major milestone in deep‑sea wind power with the full‑capacity grid connection of the Three Gorges Jiangsu Dafeng 800 MW offshore wind project. Located in the northeast sea area of Dafeng District, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, the site stretches as far as 85.5 kilometers (53 miles) from shore, making it the country's farthest offshore wind farm currently in operation.
The project consists of four sites and includes 98 wind turbines, three offshore booster stations, and one offshore rescue platform. Due to the vast sea area and long distance from land, construction was highly challenging. To overcome this, the team developed its own meteorological early warning platform, enabling precise forecasts and efficient use of construction windows. This innovation has provided valuable experience for future projects in deeper and more remote seas.
The wind farm is expected to generate more than 2.8 billion kilowatt‑hours annually, enough to supply electricity for about 1.4 million households. This output is equivalent to saving 860,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2.37 million tons each year. The project will continuously deliver clean energy to the Yangtze River Delta, supporting the region's green and low‑carbon development.
The Three Gorges Group, established in 1993, is one of China's largest state‑owned enterprises in the energy sector. Best known for building and operating the Three Gorges Dam-the world's largest hydroelectric project-the company has expanded into wind, solar, and other renewable energy fields. Today, it plays a leading role in China's clean energy transition, with offshore wind power becoming a key part of its portfolio and a symbol of the country's growing expertise in deep‑sea energy development.
