Shanghai researchers develop AI-powered glasses-free 3D display that eliminates dizziness
A research team from the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, working jointly with Fudan University, has unveiled a next‑generation glasses‑free 3D display system called EyeReal. The work was recently published in Nature and represents one of the most significant advancements in naked‑eye 3D technology to date.
The EyeReal system delivers a wide viewing angle of more than 100 degrees and supports full parallax, meaning it provides both horizontal and vertical depth cues. Viewers can experience 3D visuals on a desktop‑sized display without wearing any special equipment. The system also avoids the dizziness and discomfort commonly caused by traditional 3D displays, which often struggle with mismatched visual depth cues.
At the core of EyeReal is an AI‑driven light‑field reconstruction engine. A custom deep‑learning model determines the viewer's eye position in just 0.02 seconds and instantly generates the corresponding 3D light‑field pattern. A compact three‑layer LCD optical stack then projects the reconstructed light precisely toward the user's eyes, creating a stable and realistic stereoscopic effect in real time.
Researchers say this breakthrough demonstrates how artificial intelligence can overcome physical limitations that conventional optical engineering has struggled with for years. By using AI to dynamically calculate and rebuild light‑field information, the system achieves performance levels previously considered unattainable for consumer‑scale displays.
EyeReal was developed within the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, an institution known for its work in foundational AI research, large‑scale computing, and applied machine‑learning systems.
