China's GPMI interface set to surpass Type-C and HDMI
The Shenzhen 8K Ultra HD Video Industry Collaboration Alliance has announced that the General Purpose Multimedia Interface (GPMI) standard will soon be released, marking a major milestone in China's push for independent high-speed multimedia technology.
The upcoming standards will cover the physical layer, protocol layer, power supply, security, and interoperability, providing unified specifications for chips, terminals, and testing equipment. This ensures consistency across the industry supply chain.
GPMI is a high-speed digital interface developed in China that integrates signal, power, audio, and video transmission into a single cable. It is also compatible with Type-C connectors. Key specifications include:
- Bandwidth up to 192 Gbps
- Power delivery capacity of 480 W
- Support for 8K video at 120 frames per second
These capabilities allow GPMI to meet the needs of TVs, set-top boxes, and monitors, while also extending to smart homes, virtual reality, and cloud computing, where high bandwidth and reliability are critical.
The standard is being developed by a working group led by the China Institute of Electronics Standardization, along with more than 90 companies including Huawei, Skyworth, and Hisense. The strategy emphasizes group standard trials, synchronized industry and national standards, and early international standard planning, ensuring China's technology is positioned globally.
The Shenzhen 8K Ultra HD Video Industry Collaboration Alliance (SUCA Alliance) is a Chinese industry consortium focused on advancing video and multimedia technologies. It brings together leading companies such as Huawei, Skyworth, and Hisense to develop unified standards for next-generation interfaces and display technologies. By coordinating research, development, and standardization, the alliance plays a key role in strengthening China's position in global multimedia innovation.
