Forum on grid-based energy storage highlights innovation and large-scale applications
On November 24, 2025, the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineers, together with Huawei Digital Energy, successfully hosted the Forum on the Application and Development of Grid-Based Energy Storage in Changsha. The event focused on accelerating verification and application of grid technology to support the high-quality development of new power systems.
Experts and industry leaders emphasized that grid-based energy storage is a critical technology for stabilizing power systems as renewable energy becomes a primary source. Demonstrations have already proven successful in new energy stations and local grids, and conditions are now favorable for broader deployment. Future efforts will focus on planning, technical research, demonstration projects, standardization, and policy improvements.
Speakers from the National Energy Administration highlighted the importance of grid-based technology in new power systems, calling for faster adoption in typical scenarios and stronger standard and policy frameworks. Huawei executives noted that the key challenge is enabling wind and solar power to support grid stability like traditional sources. Huawei pledged to accelerate large-scale demonstrations and ensure safety through advanced product architecture and lifecycle evaluation systems.
Case studies were shared from Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Guangdong, where grid-based storage projects have improved voltage support, reliability, and renewable integration. For example, Tibet's 6MW/24MWh project is the world's first ultra-high-altitude grid-based storage station, while Xinjiang's 25MW/100MWh project serves as a demonstration platform for large-scale renewable integration.
The forum also saw the release of the "Grid-Based Energy Storage Safety White Paper," outlining lifecycle safety standards and digital management practices. Huawei and industry partners jointly issued a development initiative to expand applications, improve standards, and strengthen innovation in grid-based storage.
Huawei Digital Energy, a division of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., is the primary manufacturer and developer of grid-based energy storage solutions showcased at the forum. Huawei's systems are designed to meet international safety standards and support projects ranging from megawatt-hour to gigawatt-hour scale. Costs are typically reported in Chinese yuan (CNY) and converted for international audiences, with large-scale projects ranging from ¥200 million to ¥1 billion (approximately $28 million to $140 million USD). Systems are engineered to provide voltage support, inertia, and reliability across diverse environments, from high-altitude regions to weak-grid scenarios.
