East China's largest "power bank" surpasses 10 billion kWh milestone
The Changlongshan Pumped Storage Power Station in Anji, Zhejiang Province, operated by the China Three Gorges Group, has reached a major milestone with cumulative on‑grid electricity exceeding 10 billion kilowatt‑hours. Known as the largest "power bank" in East China, the facility plays a critical role in stabilizing the regional power grid.
The station has a total installed capacity of 2.1 million kilowatts, consisting of six reversible pumped storage units rated at 350,000 kilowatts each. With a rated head of 710 meters, its designed annual average generation is 2.435 billion kWh. Since commissioning, the units have been started more than 14,500 times, operated for over 67,000 hours, and responded to grid emergencies nearly 300 times.
During the peak summer of 2025, the station provided 33 rapid support operations to ease electricity demand pressure. In the current peak winter season, operators are conducting intensive inspections, hidden danger investigations, and emergency drills to ensure the units can be dispatched and started at any time.
The pumped storage system acts as a "regulator" for the grid, storing energy during off‑peak periods and releasing it when demand surges. This capability is vital for balancing renewable energy fluctuations and maintaining grid reliability.
The Changlongshan Pumped Storage Power Station is built and operated by the China Three Gorges Group, one of the largest state‑owned enterprises in China's energy sector. Established in 1993, the group is best known for constructing and managing the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydroelectric power project. Today, it oversees a wide portfolio of hydropower, wind, and solar projects across China and abroad, positioning itself as a global leader in clean energy development and grid stability solutions.
