China's VR sector explodes, now home to over 10,000 companies
China's virtual reality (VR) industry has reached a major milestone, officially housing more than 10,000 operating companies by the end of 2024. The figure, announced at the conclusion of the 2025 World Conference on VR Industry (WCVRI) in Nanchang, highlights the nation's aggressive push into immersive digital technology.Xie Shaofeng, a chief engineer for China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, stated that the country has successfully laid the groundwork for a robust, self-sufficient VR ecosystem. This includes not just a massive number of companies, but also a rapidly diversifying application base and a well-developed industrial supply chain.
According to Xie, recent focused efforts have led to significant progress in core VR technologies, standardization, and technological integration across various sectors.
Crucially, China is also asserting its influence on global VR development. The nation has recently developed more than 30 national industry standards and has taken the lead in establishing nearly 10 international standards, particularly for areas like virtual digital human technology and VR hardware. This effort aims to guide the long-term, regulated growth of the fast-moving VR industry.
The WCVRI, hosted by the Jiangxi provincial government, has been held annually in Nanchang for six consecutive sessions, cementing the city's role as a major hub for this emerging technology.
