China's record‑breaking high‑speed rail shield machine passes 10,000‑meter milestone
China has announced a major breakthrough in tunnel construction: the country's self‑developed high‑speed rail shield machine, nicknamed "Pilot," has successfully advanced more than 10,000 meters in the Chongtai Yangtze River Tunnel project.
The shield machine is enormous, measuring 148 meters in length and weighing about 4,000 tons. Its cutterhead diameter reaches 15.4 meters, making it the largest of its kind worldwide. Equipped with intelligent systems capable of independent analysis and judgment, the machine enables unmanned tunneling controlled by advanced algorithms. It has already set a world record by achieving 718 meters of monthly tunneling in a 15‑meter‑grade high‑speed rail tunnel.
The Chongtai Yangtze River Tunnel is part of the Shanghai-Chongqing-Rongzhou high‑speed railway, a key route in China's "eight vertical and eight horizontal" rail network. The tunnel stretches 14.25 kilometers in total, with 13.2 kilometers constructed using shield technology. It is notable for its scale and complexity: a single tunneling section extends 11.3 kilometers, the underwater design speed is 350 km/h (≈217 mph), and the maximum buried depth reaches 89 meters (≈292 feet). These specifications make it one of the most advanced and largest cross‑river high‑speed rail tunnels in the world.
Once completed, the tunnel will significantly shorten travel times between major cities along the Yangtze River. For example, the fastest journey from Chongming to Shanghai's Baoshan Station is expected to take only about 17 minutes.
The shield machine "Pilot" was developed by Chinese engineering teams specializing in large‑scale tunneling equipment. China has become a global leader in shield machine technology, producing equipment for metro systems, water conservancy projects, and high‑speed rail. Domestic manufacturers have focused on building machines with larger diameters, higher automation, and intelligent control systems, enabling the country to tackle some of the most challenging underground projects worldwide.
