Artificial Intelligence Open Alliance Established With Tsinghua and Peking University ParticipationOn December 16, 2025, Tsinghua University announced the official establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Open Alliance. The alliance was initiated under the guidance of China's Ministry of Education Department of Science, Technology, and Information Technology, bringing together 17 leading universities and 8 major technology enterprises and research institutions.

The alliance is designed as an international, open, and non‑profit strategic collaboration platform. Its mission is to shoulder national responsibilities in AI development, focus on real‑world applications, drive core innovation, and promote ecological openness and sharing. Tsinghua University serves as the first chair institution, with the secretariat also located there.

The alliance will undertake major national AI research projects, build an independent and controllable technical infrastructure system, and cultivate high‑level AI talent. This initiative reflects China's ambition to strengthen its position in global artificial intelligence competitiveness.

The 17 universities already announced include Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Sun Yat‑sen University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Southeast University, Xiamen University, Southern University of Science and Technology, Westlake University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The names of the participating enterprises and institutions have not yet been disclosed.
